Suffering from Heart Disease and Diabetes Pay Attention You May be More Susceptible to Psoriasis

Psoriasis is among the most common skin diseases and it affects about two percent of the population worldwide. It is an autoimmune condition, which causes skin cells to grow thirty times faster than that of the normal skin cells. People who are affected by the disease develop thick red patches of raised skin, which normally occur in the joint areas like the elbows and knees. These are the common places which psoriasis affects. The disease can also affect other body parts, including the genitals.

Just like most chronic diseases, psoriasis is also associated with other health problems such as type 2 diabetes and psoriatic arthritis. It is also linked to heart disease, stroke and metabolic syndrome. According to studies, there is a link between type 2 diabetes and psoriasis. A Danish study published in the journal Diabetes Care in August 2013 stated that individuals with psoriasis whether severe or mild had higher chances of developing type 2 diabetes when compared to individuals who were not suffering from this condition. It also stated that the more severe the condition was, the higher the chances of developing the type 2 diabetes.

You should not ignore psoriasis complications, especially if it is associated with a chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes. It is important to pay attention to other risk factors and try to minimize them as part of your strategy to manage psoriasis. For instance, you should try losing weight if you are obese. You should also quit smoking, eat healthy foods and exercise on a regular basis.
